Oosterend
Church and religion
Oosterend is also called the ‘ Jerusalem of the North ’ because of the many churches. There were once seven, now only three. Oosterend also has the only reformatory private school in the whole of the Netherlands: the Timothy school.
Het Cafeetje
The Cafeetje is a household name in Oosterend. In this brown village café you can enjoy lunch, dinner, tasty snack or drinks. The café is known for its good cuisine and cozy atmosphere.
Spotting birds
Along the Wadden Sea, east of Oosterend, you can see beautiful birds ‘kieken’. For example at the Wagejot or the Iron Cape. It is very quiet here, and ó so beautiful!

Tips for real Texel lovers
Stay in De Koog
Staying overnight in De Koog Texel and the surrounding area is no problem at all. In and around the village, apartment complexes, luxury holiday bungalows, campsites and snug holiday homes link up. However, it is wise to book in advance. That way, you can be sure to end up in accommodation that meets your demands for comfort and luxury. For example, our flats Juliana or Zeedistel. Beautiful flats on the dune at the edge of De Koog. Would you prefer a luxurious family villa, equipped with every comfort, with the sea and entertainment within walking distance? Holiday for human and animals
A Texel holiday De Koog means fun for people and animals. Not only is there plenty to do on the beach, in the woods and in the seaside resort of De Koog, our accommodation is also designed to suit every individual. For example, the family villas are surrounded by spacious lawns, spacious enough for a ball game with the children or a romp with the dog. Some of our holiday bungalows even have a playground equipment in the garden and several terraces at your disposal.
Parking and public transport
In De Koog and at the beach resorts, parking is paid everywhere. At your accommodation, your car is of course free. If you want to use public transport, you have two options. Connexxion line 28 runs on the route ferry port ‘t Horntje, Den Burg to the centre of De Koog. The second transport service is Texelhopper. With more than 130 pick-up points, the small vans come to all villages and drive past all of Texel's attractions. If you give at least one hour's notice, you can also book the service by time and place.
Natuur nabij De Koog
Despite De Koog being a holiday village, where you will find plenty of entertainment, you are not deprived of nature. On the contrary, apartment complex Juliana, for example, is in the middle of the dunes and only 150 m from the village centre. Although the bungalows on the Orchismient are located in a bungalow district, it is completely embedded in the National Park De Duinen van Texel. From your bungalow, you can walk straight into the woods. To get a good idea of the work of nature, there is a 14.5-kilometre walking route Dunes of Texel around De Koog, downloadable at routeyou.
Walking and cycling
De Koog is a great base for beautiful cycling trips and walks. The village is located almost centrally on the island and is surrounded by the woods of the National Park De Duinen van Texel. The protected nature reserve has a whole network of short and longer walking routes, cycle paths and mountain bike trails. In the walking area de Seeting, the stretch between De Koog and Ecomare, the footpaths are also suitable for mobility scooters and wheelchairs. To introduce visitors to the hidden corners of Texel, Staatsbosbeheer regularly organises interesting excursions. Not only for the able-bodied, but also for people with disabilities. Ask at the reception desk of Ecomare.
Sigthseeing
Ecomare, Eierland lighthouse, the Oudheidkamer, ‘t Walvisvaarderhuisje and Fort Oudeschild are the most famous sights on our largest Wadden Island. Also worth a visit are: the Texel Zoo, with its spectacular bird of prey show and special butterfly garden, Kaap Skil, the Beachcomber's Museum Flora and the War and Aviation Museum at Texel Airport. Depending on the time of year you visit the island, birdwatching in the month of May, the Texel Regatta in the month of June, mushroom walks with the forest ranger in October and lamb cuddling in winter/spring are also good reasons to stay overnight in Texel De Koog.
