Our regular guest Gerhard Christenhuis is a nature photographer. A number of photos have been put on canvas and adorn the corridors of our Juliana apartment complex, among others. Getting up early is the motto if only for the nicer light. To learn his way around Texel, he regularly went out with a forester and guides from, among others, the Bird Information Centre (in de Cocksdorp) in the first few years. Using the car as a hide is fine, many birds are used to that, but it is better to walk into nature and then find a quiet spot somewhere . With patience, nature (read birds etc.) will come to you automatically . At the moment there is a nest of Marsh Harriers in the Mok Bay, which is best spotted or photographed from the car . Some distance is desirable, last years they were gone in no time after being disturbed.
We and Gerhard advise our guests to also bring binoculars this coming weekend to spot the beautiful birds of Texel. This weekend, the Dutch Birding Spring Weekend is planned.
Together with the Bird Information Centre Texel, Dutch Birding is organising the Dutch Birding Spring Weekend on 10, 11 and 12 May 2019. As every year, the weekend is dedicated to birdwatching and the search for unusual species, during the Friday and Saturday evenings embellished with interesting lectures. Statistically, these days of May are the best days to discover rarities, and Texel has long been the municipality where most rarities are discovered. During the Dutch Birding Spring Weekend, all birders are welcome, patron or not. Everyone takes care of their own overnight stay and birding the weekend in their own way.
The Bird Information Centre and the National Park Dunes of Texel organise the Wadden Bird Festival on Texel in the same weekend. On 11 & 12 May 2019, the Bird Information Centre will be the central point where you can get all information about this weekend, the birds, the Texel Big Day, guided excursions, manned bird-watching points and the binocular show. The Bird Information Centre is open all weekend from 9am-6pm. Address: Kikkertstraat 42, 1795 AE De Cocksdorp.
On Friday morning 10 May 2019 at 7.00 am, the competitive element of the Spring Weekend starts: the search for the best species of the weekend! The programme ends with the award ceremony to the discoverer of the weekend's best species, on Sunday 12 May 2019 at 18:00. You can read the Dutch Birding Spring Weekend programme here.
Dutch Birding members, Big Day teams, other birders or interested parties: everyone is welcome to join the various activities throughout the weekend!
